10 Tips to Get Your Backyard Ready for Kids and Pets This Spring

Spring is the perfect time for outdoor fun, but before you let kids and pets loose in the backyard, a little preparation goes a long way. A safe, clean, and engaging outdoor space can help prevent accidents and make sure everyone—two-legged and four-legged—has a great time.

From safety checks to fun upgrades, here are 10 essential tips to get your backyard ready for spring adventures.

1. Check for Hidden Hazards

Before letting kids or pets run free, do a thorough safety sweep. Look for broken fencing, loose boards, sharp objects, or anything that could be a choking or injury hazard.

Make sure there are no gaps in the fence where pets or toddlers could escape. Repair or replace any damaged areas to keep the yard safe.

2. Remove Toxic Plants and Chemicals

Many common plants—like lilies, azaleas, and oleander—are toxic to pets if ingested. If you’re unsure, research your plants or ask a vet before planting anything new.

Also, store fertilizers, pesticides, and weed killers in a locked area. Choose pet-safe and kid-friendly lawn treatments whenever possible.

3. Reseed or Patch Bare Grass Spots

Winter can leave your yard looking patchy. If your grass has bare spots, reseed those areas early in spring to prevent mud puddles and uneven ground.

For a pet-friendly option, consider clover or artificial turf—both are durable and easy on paws.

4. Set Up a Kid- and Pet-Friendly Play Area

If you want to keep kids and pets entertained (and out of trouble), designate a play space with safe toys, a sandbox, or an obstacle course.

For dogs, adding a digging pit or agility toys can prevent them from tearing up the yard. For kids, soft grass or mulch makes a safe base under swing sets or slides.

5. Clean and Refresh Outdoor Furniture

Wipe down and inspect patio furniture, umbrellas, and cushions for mold, rust, or loose screws.

If furniture is looking faded, consider adding waterproof cushions or a fresh coat of paint to brighten up your outdoor space.

6. Secure Water Features and Pools

If you have a pool, pond, or even a large water bowl, make sure they’re properly covered or fenced to prevent accidents.

For small kids and pets, always supervise water play and consider a motion-detecting pool alarm for extra safety.

7. Keep Pesky Bugs at Bay

Mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks come out in full force in spring, so take steps to keep them away.

  • Remove standing water where mosquitoes breed.
  • Use pet-safe flea and tick treatments.
  • Plant bug-repelling herbs like lavender, mint, or citronella around your yard.

8. Add Shade and Cooling Spots

As the weather warms up, shade becomes essential—especially for pets who can’t regulate their body temperature as well as humans.

Set up shaded areas with umbrellas, trees, or a cooling mat for pets to relax on. For extra fun, add a kiddie pool or water bowl station to keep everyone hydrated.
