10 Indoor Activities for Dogs on Bad Weather Days

Rain, snow, or sweltering heat can put a damper on your daily walk routine—but that doesn’t mean your dog has to be bored. Staying indoors can still be exciting with the right mix of mental and physical stimulation.

Here are 10 fun, energy-burning indoor activities to keep your pup happy and engaged when the weather keeps you inside.

1. Hide and Seek

This classic game isn’t just for kids. Ask your dog to “stay” while you hide somewhere in the house, then call them to find you.

It’s mentally stimulating and reinforces recall skills. If your dog doesn’t know “stay,” have someone else hold them while you sneak away.

Puzzle toys are a great way to entertain and challenge your dog. Fill them with treats or kibble and let your pup work to release the reward.

No puzzle toy? Hide treats under plastic cups or inside a muffin tin covered with tennis balls.

3. Indoor Obstacle Course

Use furniture, cushions, and broomsticks to build a mini agility course. Guide your dog through jumps, weaves, and tunnels.

It’s great exercise and helps with focus and coordination—all without needing a yard.

Grab a sturdy rope toy and challenge your dog to a game of tug. Let them win sometimes to keep it fun and confidence-building.

Use a cue like “drop it” to practice impulse control while keeping the game safe and structured.

5. Scent Games

Tap into your dog’s natural sniffing instincts with scent games. Hide treats in different parts of the house and let them search.

Start easy, then increase the challenge by using cardboard boxes or more obscure hiding spots.

6. Training Sessions

Short training sessions keep your dog’s mind active. Practice basic commands or try new tricks like “spin,” “crawl,” or “high five.”

Use treats or praise to reward effort, and keep sessions upbeat and short (5–10 minutes is perfect).

7. Interactive Tug-Puzzle Hybrid

Toys that combine tugging and puzzle elements give dogs a double workout. Look for toys with hidden compartments or tug ropes you can stuff.

These toys offer both physical and mental stimulation—ideal for rainy-day energy.

Sometimes the best activity is just quiet time together. Settle in with a blanket, your dog’s favorite toy, and enjoy each other’s company.

Calm time can be just as bonding and beneficial as play—especially after a busy training or scent game session.
