10 Tips for Building a Storm Shelter for Your Pets

When severe weather hits, your pet’s safety is just as important as your own. A well-prepared storm shelter can keep them calm and protected during hurricanes, tornadoes, and other extreme weather events. Just like you wouldn’t leave them outside in dangerous conditions, you shouldn’t leave their safety to chance when a storm rolls in.

Even if you don’t have a dedicated storm shelter, you can create a safe space in your home where your pet will be protected from high winds, flying debris, and panic-inducing noise. Follow these ten tips to build a storm shelter that keeps your furry family members secure.

Choose a Safe Location

The safest place for a storm shelter is underground, like a basement or storm cellar. If that’s not an option, choose an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows and exterior walls. Bathrooms, laundry rooms, or closets can work well as emergency pet shelters.

Make It Escape-Proof

During storms, pets may panic and try to escape. Make sure your shelter has a secure door that latches properly. If using a bathroom or closet, place a barrier in front of the door to prevent them from pushing it open. A crate or carrier can also provide extra security.

Stock Up on Emergency Supplies

Keep a pet emergency kit in your storm shelter. Include food, water, bowls, medications, a leash, waste bags, and a pet first aid kit. Store at least three days’ worth of supplies in airtight containers to ensure freshness.

Provide Comfort Items

Bedsure Elevated Bed

A storm can be terrifying for pets, so make their shelter as comfortable as possible. Add a familiar blanket, a soft bed, and a favorite toy to help them feel safe. If your pet is crate-trained, bring their crate inside the shelter.

Include Identification and Records

If the worst happens and you get separated from your pet, identification can help you reunite. Make sure they wear a collar with up-to-date ID tags, and keep copies of vaccination records and emergency contact numbers in a waterproof folder.

Ensure Proper Ventilation

If your storm shelter is an enclosed space, make sure it has proper airflow. Cracking a door slightly or using battery-powered fans can help prevent stuffiness. If using a basement or underground shelter, consider adding a vent for fresh air.

Plan for Bathroom Needs

Your pet may be stuck in the shelter for hours, so be prepared for bathroom breaks. For dogs, keep extra potty pads or a small section of artificial grass. For cats, store a disposable litter box with fresh litter in your emergency kit.

Train Your Pet to Use the Shelter

The last thing you want is a pet who refuses to enter the shelter when a storm is approaching. Introduce them to the space ahead of time by placing treats, toys, and bedding inside. Practice short stays so they associate it with safety rather than fear.
